Records You’ll Want To Own

Friday, May 29th, 2009

I have a guest mix coming up shortly on Records You’ll Want To Own, a site run by my bro JB The Deejay. It’s a personal trip down memory lane back to a club we used to run together with Gavin Murphy and the Influx boys that was called Crash!, and used to take place on Sundays upstairs in 4 Dame Lane. I’m still trying to track down some of the flyer images, which were some of the best I’ve ever seen in Dublin thanks to the collaboration between Gavin and Pete Reddy (Redman AKA).

[Update 01/06/09]

I started buying Rockwell t-shirts the first time I visited Abaka in Nice, and I haven’t looked back since. Now, they’re available direct from Rockwell online too, so if I miss out on something in Abaka, I can just order it. They are still €35 each so they won’t be for everyone, but they’re good quality and cool designs.

Kanye also mentioned them recently, so that should stop the uber-chic from going near them.

I don’t have the full picture yet of what the difference between Rockwell, Parra, and Le Le is exactly, but you should take a look at the Rockwell Blog for loads more art and music links relating to all three.

What Does A $12.1 Million Ferrari Look Like?

Last year when Chris Evans bought a Ferrari 250 GT California for £5 Million I thought two things:

  1. He’s mad!
  2. He’s even richer than I thought!

Turns out he may be onto something. A couple of weeks ago another very rare Ferrari, in this case a 1957 Testa Rossa, sold for $12.1 Million, and in this article in the Telegraph he explains why a Ferrari 250 GTO is worth £15 Million. Rare things that can’t be reproduced or created from scratch are where it’s at in the recession it seems. If only we’d started buying blue diamonds and rare Ferraris a few months ago! :)

This story does bring to mind the BBC documentary about modern art dealers propping up the price of various artists’ works in order to protect their own investment. The difference here I guess though is scarcity. There are tens of thousands of Warhol pieces out there, and thousands of Hirst pieces too, but only a few hundred really rare vintage Ferraris.

This concept looks great, but would literally be a pain in the neck to play.

I think this falls into the category “Don’t Try This At Home Kids!”. Taking pictures of things flying in front of the sun does’t sound like the safest thing in the world to be doing, but judging from the above the results can be very pretty. However, it does also remind me of that very valuable leason from Fr. Ted:

G.I. Joe Movie Trailer in HD

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Probably my favourite toys growing up after Lego, and M.A.S.K. and ThunderCats and… Well, one of my many favourite toys growing up was Action Force or G.I. Joe, depending on which side of the Atlantic you’re reading this from. Above is the trailer for the inevitable movie based on the toy based on the comic (or whichever order they first appeared).

As has been remarked elsewhere, there’s more than a touch of Iron Man and X-Men to this, and given the nostalgia value alone, it’ll probably open huge as they say in the States. Nice to see Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow make an appearance, and at each other’s throats, right where they belong. :)

The G.I. Joe movie opens in Ireland on August 7th according to Movies.ie, but on May 29th in the States according to the Hasbro site linked above.

Tim Minchin At Vicar Street

Tim Minchin

Tim Minchin

I blogged briefly before about two of Tim Minchin’s YouTube videos which highlighted how interlinked the funny and the dark sides of his stage persona were. In one video he sings Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” somewhat seriously, in the other he sings his own song If You Really Loved Me for laughs, but still somewhat seriously.

I think the first time I saw any of Tim’s songs was when he appeared at the Secret Policeman’s Ball in 2008. He was funny, and different, but after doing a bit of digging it turned out he had some much better or maybe just funnier songs, like this one.

Tim plays in Vicar Street on September 17th, and there are still tickets available.

A company called Gullwing America run by Arturo Alonso is about to embark on the long overdue re-imagining of one of the world’s most beautiful cars, the 1954 Mercedes Benz 300 SL (Gullwing – W198).

From the pictures above, you can see they’ve pretty much left the looks alone, which is no bad thing. The internals are said to be all modern and largely Merecedes sourced.

There are loads more articles and pictures on the web about it. The ones above come from World Car Fans, while I first read about it on The Cool Hunter (thanks to JB The DeeJay of Records You’ll Want To Own).
