Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Bit of a last minute thing but if you want to be in with a chance to win a double pass to see Shadow Dancer do their live set tomorrow in Kennedy’s, with myself and Chewy and Louis Scully in support, just drop me an email to shadowdancer@philth.is and tell me what record label Shadow Dancer appear on.

For those of you who don’t win, the gig kicks off at 11 tomorrow (Friday) night, and hopefully I’ll see a few of you there.

La Musique – Sandinos – Derry

La Musique at Sandinos, Derry

La Musique at Sandinos, Derry

This Saturday I’m hitting the road and heading to Derry to play for La Musique in Sandinos. They’ve already hosted gigs by Hystereo and Deadbots, and they have the Filthy Dukes coming over on Easter Monday, so I reckon I’ll be right at home in their club. Doors are at 10pm. Hopefully I’ll see some of you there. If you make it, you’ll be the first to hear a couple of Philthy re-edits I’ve just done. :)

Dancepig vs Mano Le Tough Live

Dancepig vs Mano Le Tough

Dancepig vs Mano Le Tough

The boys from Berlin (well, sort of…) are back this Saturday, March 28th, for their second head to head gig, which after the success of the first promises to be a packed affair. Andrew’s Lane Theatre is the venue of choice this time, and support comes from Lil’ Dave and Job. Live visuals on the night come from the multi-talented Shonagh Hurley. It’s my club of the week.

As is typical of Dublin these days, there’s also another gig worth checking out the same night, which is Zombie Nation (live) in the Button Factory. His new album Zombielicious just came out at the start of the month and is getting great reviews. Any other night I’d be there like a shot but it’s Andrew’s Lane for me this time.

Mixed Salad At The Legal Eagle

Mixed Salad at The Legal Eagle

Mixed Salad at The Legal Eagle

A plug for  myself this time. I’ve been playing these Mixed Salad events for years now. They used to run all day on bank holiday sundays in McGruders on Thomas Street, and were pretty much the closest you could get to a no-frills, back-in-the-day rave in Dublin and were always fun to play at. I’m glad that the guys behind the gig have decided to run it again, albeit in a smaller venue, this March 14th – a saturday this time.

It runs from 1pm to sometime between 11 and 12 midnight, and admission is €15. For that your hard earned recession euros you get the following DJs and live acts:

DOWNSTAIRS CLUB ROOM (HOUSE & TECHNO)

MATADOR
AL KEEGAN
ARVEENE
PHILTH
JAY GROGAN OLDSKOOL SET
SIMON F
BLOOD OR MONEY AKA SINISTER INDUSTRY
LIL DAVE
STRING LIVE
GILES K
AARON NOLAN

UPSTAIRS (BANGERS AND MASH UP)

DAVE SALACIOUS
MARK ALTON
HOSPITAL LIVE
CONKY
LYONSYTRON
NIC JAMES
MICK O BRIAN
DICK

Hopefully I’ll see some of you there.

Dashboard @ 4 Dame Lane

Dashboard @ 4 Dame Lane

Dashboard @ 4 Dame Lane

A little bit last minute on this one, but if you’re looking for something good to do after the Cheap As Chips exhibition later today, then I can also recommend this gig (bands and DJs) playing in the (much underused) upstairs room of 4 Dame Lane.

On the line up are the highly recommended (to me, not by me for once) Funeral Suits, along with DJ sets from Hystereo and Jevan. Runs from 8pm until 2.30am and costs just €5 before 10pm, or €10 after.

Words. Pictures. Videos. Music.

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

I’m finally back on the Internet in my own time so I can spend a bit of time writing, posting pictures, videos and music again.

There is much to write about at the moment, but proper journalists are doing a pretty good job of covering the Big Issues of our day so I’m going to leave most of them alone for now. I am pretty interested in how leaderless our country is at the moment though, and how this listless government is steering us straight into bankruptcy and perpetual debt. But that’s a thought for another day.

Tonight one of my favourite people in the city is having her beautiful birthday party not far from where I live, but because of the gloom monster hanging over the city I’m going to be playing it safe and lining my nest with philthy lucre indulging my musicality.

I’ve always been one for not letting jobs get in the way of having a real life but even I’m conscious of not falling foul of credit crunches and other undefined economic menaces. Still, at least the party starts early so I’ll get to go for a while before disappearing off into the night.

Things to do tonight (the 24th) for the rest of you:
Check out Calvin and Sol playing in Wax (Club Of The Week!)
Speedy J is in the Twisted Pepper
Pick one of the hundred or so Oscar movies that just came out
Come say hi to me in Pantibar

I came across a link to the Backlash website earlier and I got nostalgic for a minute. I do love that last poster.

Ben Westbeech @ The Underground – Saturday July 26th

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Plenty of gigs to choose from this week but the pick of them is Ben Westbeech @ The Underground on Saturday. His July top 10 might give a hint to what you might expect:

  1. Proxy – Raven (Turbo)
  2. Rhadoo – Rose Rouge [a:rpia:r]
  3. Radioslave – No sleep (Nobu) (Rekids)
  4. Duke Dumont – Hoy! (Dubside)
  5. Fake Blood – Mars (Cheap Thrills)
  6. Machines don’t care – Afro Jacker (Cheap Thrills)
  7. Digitalism – Zdarlight (Kitsune)
  8. Dj Sega – Be (Ol Head Records)
  9. Idiotproof – Gorilla (Made to Play)
  10. Solomun – Beauty and the Beast (TwentyRecordings)

I’m looking forward to catching two of the hardest working DJs in Dublin in support too. Louche and Conor Feeney are well known as the promoters of 52 Funk and Big Dish Go! respectively but are also two of the biggest music lovers you’ll ever meet. Expect quality all night long.
