Something, Something, Something, Dark Side
Tuesday, December 1st, 2009I really hope they’re keeping the funny bits for the actual DVD because from the trailer it looks like they’ve missed the mark with some of the best source material ever!

XKCD is a great online comic that regularly touches on maths and physics, which gets my vote. While the humour is often dark, the cell above is probably not about what you think it is. However, it is nicely drawn and from a good example of why I like the site. Check out “Wings” to see the whole strip.
“Lonley Knights” is another cool piece from Eoin Ryan’s Space Avalanche. Now you can buy it as a tshirt or a print too. Batman seems to be a recurring theme for Eoin. Take a look at “Getting Ready To Go Out“, “The Dark Knight“, and “Batman“. You can follow Eoin on Twitter now too at http://twitter.com/spaceavalanche
I never got around to seeing Watchmen, and probably never will. Maybe this movie can fill that void? Judging from the trailer though it looks a little bit like it’s going to fall into the “trying to hard to be funny and cool” category.

I think this falls into the category “Don’t Try This At Home Kids!”. Taking pictures of things flying in front of the sun does’t sound like the safest thing in the world to be doing, but judging from the above the results can be very pretty. However, it does also remind me of that very valuable leason from Fr. Ted:
I blogged briefly before about two of Tim Minchin’s YouTube videos which highlighted how interlinked the funny and the dark sides of his stage persona were. In one video he sings Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” somewhat seriously, in the other he sings his own song If You Really Loved Me for laughs, but still somewhat seriously.
I think the first time I saw any of Tim’s songs was when he appeared at the Secret Policeman’s Ball in 2008. He was funny, and different, but after doing a bit of digging it turned out he had some much better or maybe just funnier songs, like this one.
Tim plays in Vicar Street on September 17th, and there are still tickets available.
This is a slightly weird but quite funny concept – remix the news using music, and in particular the Auto-Tune. I think the first video above is the better of the two, but the second one is worth watching just for the bit with Katie Couric singing which starts at 1 minute 22 seconds in.
This is episode 3 of Charlie Brooker’s new Newswipe show, the spin-off from Screenwipe. It’s like a cross between the history of Television news and the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Entertaining and informative? Who’da thunk it?
I’ll post the first two episode here also once I put them into playlists. Special thanks to xthemusic on YouTube for capturing and posting the videos.
For those of you into such things, you can also follow Charlie Brooker on Twitter.
[Apologies for the video being too big for the page - bloody HD broadcasts!]
Having not gotten into Peep Show properly yet I wouldn’t call myself a fan of Robert Webb. In fact he’s one of those people that I have a mild dislike of for no apparent reason. Here though he channels his inner Dr. Frank-N-Furter for Comic Relief’s dance program and it’s hard not to laugh. Good work from Comic Relief for hijacking the celebs dancing format to great effect.
Dinosaurs Fucking Robots. It does exactly what it says on the tin.
