philth djing at mother in copper alley

Picture thanks to Peter @ SharpShock.com

For the last 3 months I’ve taken on a residency at a new synth and electro night that was created as a fund raiser for the Gay Community News magazine. The club is called Mother and takes place in Copper Alley underneath the Arlington Hotel on Dame Street (up by Christchurch).

Myself and Kelly-Anne (pictured above with Lisa) are the residents every week, and the music policy is basically electronic music from the 70s to now minus the big obvious pop stuff like Gaga and all that. There is an emphasis on songs with words rather than straight up dance music tracks, but ultimately anything goes if it feels right.

I have to say I’ve been surprised at how quickly the club has become popular and at how wide a spectrum of music we’re getting away with playing too. The atmosphere is somewhere between a house party and and a really good bar with a DJ, and yet it is definitely a club that’s into dancing. Going until 3.30am every week helps too. :)

While Kelly-Anne is away for a few weeks we’ve had some guest DJs in including Tim from NeoSuperVital, Simon from Monkey Tennis and James from Jo Burger. The club isn’t on this week as everyone is decamping to the Milk Festival but rest assured I’ll be back on August 21st for the next installment.

It’s Still Funny

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Remember that time it snowed in Dublin and that guy was on the news and he slipped and fell over? Yeah, it was only three days ago, but it’s still funny. In fairness, who didn’t have one of these pratfalls on the ice? I know I did. :(

Temptation

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Two weeks off the booze now and what happens? Bars start to offer half price drinks all day! Thanks Panti… lead me not into temptation and all that. For now I’m keeping the Naïve Melody that goes “giving up drink is easy and I don’t miss it all” going round in my head. :)

Tim Minchin At Vicar Street

Tim Minchin

Tim Minchin

I blogged briefly before about two of Tim Minchin’s YouTube videos which highlighted how interlinked the funny and the dark sides of his stage persona were. In one video he sings Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” somewhat seriously, in the other he sings his own song If You Really Loved Me for laughs, but still somewhat seriously.

I think the first time I saw any of Tim’s songs was when he appeared at the Secret Policeman’s Ball in 2008. He was funny, and different, but after doing a bit of digging it turned out he had some much better or maybe just funnier songs, like this one.

Tim plays in Vicar Street on September 17th, and there are still tickets available.

Annie Mac Presents Dublin

Annie Mac

Annie Mac

The Annie Mac Presents tour rolls into Dublin on Thursday with a really good line-up of acts. The gig takes place in the Twisted Pepper, and joining Annie on the night are Sinden, Kormac (Live), Arveene, and Shortie. The Facebook event page for the gig is currently showing 321 people planning on attending, so it’s going to be a sell out night for sure. You can buy tickets in advance from Bodytonic tickets section of Tickets.ie.

A quick heads up on Arveene’s current production action with Misk. I got his new tracks Hells Bells and Blow Your Whistle a little while ago, and they’re both really working well on the dancefloor. Here’s a video clip of Hells Bells:

You should also grab the Arveene and Misk edit of Mr Oizo’s Gay Dentist from zShare, all with Arv’s blessing. :) [Thanks to Discobelle for the link.]

Dancepig vs Mano Le Tough Live

Dancepig vs Mano Le Tough

Dancepig vs Mano Le Tough

The boys from Berlin (well, sort of…) are back this Saturday, March 28th, for their second head to head gig, which after the success of the first promises to be a packed affair. Andrew’s Lane Theatre is the venue of choice this time, and support comes from Lil’ Dave and Job. Live visuals on the night come from the multi-talented Shonagh Hurley. It’s my club of the week.

As is typical of Dublin these days, there’s also another gig worth checking out the same night, which is Zombie Nation (live) in the Button Factory. His new album Zombielicious just came out at the start of the month and is getting great reviews. Any other night I’d be there like a shot but it’s Andrew’s Lane for me this time.

Saturdays at Wax

Saturdays at Wax

Just a quick heads up about a new occasional residency I’ll be doing on Saturdays in Wax, along with fellow residents Aidan O’Connell, Mark Alton and Barry Farrell. Expect a good mix of house, techno and electro.

It’ll be access all areas between Wax and Spy, it’s a tenner in every week even when there’s guests (Upcoming: Housemeister on May 2nd), and if you don’t tell anyone I told you, you can even get in free if you go in early enough. It kicks off on Saturday April 18th, but my first dates are:

Sat May 9th – Mark Alton + Philth DJ Set
Sat May 30th – Mark Alton + Philth DJ set

Mixed Salad At The Legal Eagle

Mixed Salad at The Legal Eagle

Mixed Salad at The Legal Eagle

A plug for  myself this time. I’ve been playing these Mixed Salad events for years now. They used to run all day on bank holiday sundays in McGruders on Thomas Street, and were pretty much the closest you could get to a no-frills, back-in-the-day rave in Dublin and were always fun to play at. I’m glad that the guys behind the gig have decided to run it again, albeit in a smaller venue, this March 14th – a saturday this time.

It runs from 1pm to sometime between 11 and 12 midnight, and admission is €15. For that your hard earned recession euros you get the following DJs and live acts:

DOWNSTAIRS CLUB ROOM (HOUSE & TECHNO)

MATADOR
AL KEEGAN
ARVEENE
PHILTH
JAY GROGAN OLDSKOOL SET
SIMON F
BLOOD OR MONEY AKA SINISTER INDUSTRY
LIL DAVE
STRING LIVE
GILES K
AARON NOLAN

UPSTAIRS (BANGERS AND MASH UP)

DAVE SALACIOUS
MARK ALTON
HOSPITAL LIVE
CONKY
LYONSYTRON
NIC JAMES
MICK O BRIAN
DICK

Hopefully I’ll see some of you there.
