303 On The Footpath
I swear these numbers find me wherever I go! This set appeared on a footpath on my way to work. For those who these numbers mean nothing to, go check out the Roland TB-303 wikipedia page.
The Roland TB-303 was one of the first machines that made me want to write and produce music. It sounded so alien and exciting that I had to find out more. For a long time I made do with poor software versions and trying to make other synths sound like a 303, but eventually I got a chance to buy a real one, and I didn’t hesitate.
It sometimes sits in the studio unloved for months at a time, but whenever I get the bug to make music, the pieces of kit I always come back to are the 303, the MPC and the distortion pedal.
Note to self: Must do a post about great tracks that use the 303…
Not for the first time, nor for the last time, another great shop is closing down. Manny’s in New York is a world famous instrument shop and news of it’s demise comes via a post on the Underworld website. I couldn’t agree more with them when they say “… it’s the staff that make a place bad or good”. I buy off people at every given opportunity. Websites are great and all that, but it’s hard to beat talking to knowledgable staff about products they are passionate about. They best ones will even tell you what not to buy! Click through to read more about the used-to-be-plain-white guitar in the picture above.

The Angelus
One picture to sum up a weekend.
I thought it’d be fun to take bad photos at the Choice Music Prize a couple of weeks ago and post them up. Or more correctly, I completely forgot to bring a camera so I had to make do with my iPhone + tipsy hands.

Is there nothing this man won’t do to get some free press? The marketeer in me tips my hat!

It’s not often I come across a blog where I like nearly everything on it, but Monster Munch is one. (It’s nothing to do with the snack / crisps of the same name before you click!) I originally came across it as one of the Fluffy Links on Mulley.net btw. I like the clean look, I like their favicon, and most of all I like the content. Here’s a small selection of images from posts just on their first page:

The Corvette Stingray was the first car I ever saw a picture of and understood that someone had actually designed it with passion. [In fact it was more than one person: Larry Shinoda and Bill Mitchell, inspired by Peter Brock and Chuck Pohlmann. See Wikipedia's Corvette page for more.] The Stingray has been updated for this concept which apparently is going to be one of the Transformers in the upcoming sequel. Taking an old design and trying to modernise it often doesn’t work, but I think this thing has a presence rare in modern car, and some of that comes from the raw, visceral shape of the original. You can see more pictures of the new concept Stingray at Jalopnik.com.

Any time I’m out and about and see the moon I can’t get this Jape song out of my head. Check it out over at his Myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/richiejape.
